General
The name Bedlington comes from the town Bedlington in Northumberland in Northern England. The Bedlington Terrier can give the initial impression of being a forlorn humble dog with it's lamb like appearance and incredibly loving, even submissive temperament
Contrary to this, the Bedlington is strong, agile, graceful, and very fast. Underneath the curly coat the Bedlington bears a uncanny resemblance to the Whippet especially the chest and hind legs. Off the lead they are as quick as a flash and the independent side of them can sometimes leave you hopelessly calling and panting behind to no avail. The Bedlington Terrier will also defend itself and its loved one's vigorously. A born hunter.
The coat is very distinctive in appearance known best for the large top-knot and 'pom pom' ears. Though the Bedlington does require regular grooming to keep its coat in good condition and free of matting thus keeping its unique shape.
The Bedlington Terrier is a wonderfully playful dog, certainly not shy and with bags of energy, always alert to warn of an 'enemy' presence. But they also have an extremely loving side, with a great mixture of playfulness, affection and companionship. Happy to be sat on your knee, sleep by your side or even be carried in your arms.
Characteristics
The breed's expression is mild and gentle and the appearance is that of a graceful, proud and well-balanced dog. Comments are often made about how soft the coat is.a 'cat like' softness especially when groomed. A perfect dog for cuddling.
There are three main types, Blue, Liver and Sandy although some are mixed with tan. Blues have a dark eye, blue and tans a lighter eye and the Livers and Sandies have light hazel.
In addition to these is the Working Bedlington bred specifically for working, catching vermin is its main occupation.
History
