swimming

My puppy when he was 10 weeks old sat and watched my collie jumping in the river to retrieve a stick. He sat there and watched him do that several times before running down to the edge, and belly flopping into the water. Fortunately by the time I had gasped in horror he had turned round and was swimming nicely back to the edge! He wasn't interested in going in again but I decided that if he was going to do crazy things like that I needed him to be confident in the water. Today was his 3rd swimming session at the hydrotherapy pool. He is good at swimming when he is in the water but he just doesn't like going in. Not even if his favourute collie is in there swimming about. I know that bedlingtons aren't known for their love of swimming but I was hoping that he would learn to enjoy it as much as my swimming mad collie.

Are there any bedlingtons out there that swim?

Lupo hates the water, as a pup I used to take him down to the beach a lot, he would always run along the shoreline but run inland as soon as a wave came rushing in. If it rains at all when we're out, he'll make an 'about-turn' and head right back home as quickly as possible, he'll also do a 'breakdance' manoveur on the carpet in order to get his coat dry lol..

One time though he had a swimming experience. We were playing on the beach at low tide and he was scampering across the sand, there was lots of small puddles about which he would run through, well one such large puddle turned out to be a small rock pool and he went straight through it and straight under the water. On seeing him dissapear I ran as fast as I could to him only to see him emerge and doggy paddle to the other side looking like a drowned rat. So I found out he can swim but he was not happy at all with the lesson lol..

I think scooter is determined to hate it. I will do 2 more sessions before I give up! I don't give up easily. I remember the look of utter disgust on his face the first time I took him out fo r a walk in the rain. He soon got over that though and doesn't mind now. It's a case that chasing the collies is so much fun he forgets about the rain!

I know what you mean about the carpet thing. My dogs also do that as soon as I've hoovered in an attempt to make it hairy and smelly again!
